Lyrics

I’m so glad there’s sugar in the water
‘Cause it gets oh so hard to swallow
Even when I don’t care
The sugar’s always been there
Even when I don’t care
The sugar’s always there

Jesus, it’s been hard
I know I’ve been bad
Angels don’t applaud
When I make you sad

They say that You’re sweet
Jesus, that’s fine
I know that I’m weak
I know that I’m blind

I’m so glad there’s sugar in the water
‘Cause it gets oh so hard to swallow
Even when I don’t care
The sugar’s always been there
Even when I don’t care
The sugar’s always there

Jesus, cleanse my heart
Write me in the book
Did You write me off?
I can’t even look

You say that I’m sweet
Jesus, that’s fine
I’m lost, I’m tired,
I’m weak, and I’m blind

I’m so glad there’s sugar in the water
‘Cause it gets oh so hard to swallow
Even when I don’t care
The sugar’s always been there
Even when I don’t care
The sugar’s always there

Lyrics

There was a man who knew too much
Boys town queen with a Midas touch
He desired to be on his knees
He acquired the big disease

Go ahead and cheer him on
A couple of years and he'll be gone
He's not like us, his mind is curved
He got what God thought he deserved

And we Stand Around And Watch
Just one man
Not that great a loss

And we Stand Around And Watch
Just one man
But not one of us

Goes to the market to buy Ovaltine
His skin is purple, his teeth are green
Twenty-five look the other way
Twenty-five figure he was gay

Go ahead and cheer him on
A couple of months and he'll be gone
It doesn't matter that he'll be crying
It doesn't matter that he'll be dying

And we Stand Around And Watch
Just one man
Not that great a loss

And we Stand Around And watch
Just one man
But not one of us

Can we Stand Around And Watch?

Lyrics

I know one day I’ll be home
Rejoicing in the presence of our Maker
Basking in the love in His eyes
Celebrating Jesus Christ forever

But in this life we take our chances
Things don’t always work out as planned
Broken dreams and failed romances
I pray that people understand

I need A Place 4 My Heart to call home
A roof over my head with love to spare
I need A Place 4 My Heart to call home
Will you take me there?

I admit it’s not all that easy
Facing my lot day by day
Whispers, pointed fingers always bring me
Down to my knees-I start to pray

God please tell me this is only temporary
The nights are cold and I’m too often alone
Please send an angel who can reassure me
That somewhere in this world I have a home

I need A Place 4 My Heart to call home
A roof over my head with love to spare
I need A Place 4 My Heart to call home
Will you take me there?

People building bridges
Life just tears them down
People loving families
Mine just ain’t around

Winter’s coming and I’m not even sure
Where I’ll rest my head
Maybe by the time you hear this
I’ll be lost among the dead
No, no, no

I need A Place 4 My Heart to call home
A roof over my head with love to spare
I need A Place 4 My Heart to call home
Will you take me there?

Jesus said, “If you do this
For the least of My children
You have done it unto Me”

Will you take me home?
Will you take me there?

Story

A rep from Habitat For Humanity commissioned me to write a song for them. I wrote and recorded "Place 4 My Heart." It was vehemently rejected, as was I, but the song went on to become one of my biggest sellers.

This live version of "Stand Around & Watch" is very close to my heart. We're approaching the 4th decade of this pandemic and still the song doesn't sound dated. So much and so little have changed since I wrote it.
